how to convert men's shoe size to women's

The next time you're asked to provide your shoe size, follow these simple steps.

What is the conversion of men's shoe size to women's?

A man’s shoe size is typically one to two sizes larger than his female equivalent. For example, a woman with a US shoe size of 8 may wear a man’s US size 10. This rule doesn't apply for certain styles, such as dress shoes or boots, which are sized differently.

What's behind this difference in shoe size? The difference is due to the fact that women's shoes tend to have narrower heel widths and higher arches than men's.

#How to Convert Men's Shoe Sizes to Women's

So, this is what happens when you Google "how to convert men's shoe sizes to women's".  All it finds are articles like this one which claim that taking 2.5 away from the answer is a good way to convert between men's and women''s shoe sizes.  They use this approach because it works out nicely in their example: "Men''s Size 10 = Women''s Size 6 = 9.5 = A Man''s Shoe Size".  But there's a problem with this approach.  It doesn't work out nicely when you're converting a men's size in the 7 range to women's sizes.  Examine the chart below:

Men''s Size Women''s Size 7 5.5 8 6 9 6.5 10 7 11 7.5 12 8 13 8.5 14 9 15 9.5

This is where the 2.5 comes into play -- it makes the numbers come out nice and neat and even, but it also greatly over-simplifies the real situation, particularly for men with large feet (which is why most people typically have difficulty in converting).  There are too many sizes in the 5.5 – 6 range and too few 7 – 10 to just say "take 2.5 away".  This makes an extra step necessary when converting men's to women's shoe size, and this is what it is:

When calculating the conversion for a man that wears a size 7 or greater in men's shoes, subtract 2 from the remainder when dividing by 2.5 (because of how division with remainders work, if you divide 13 by 2.5 you would get 4 with a remainder of 1; 1/2 = .
